Old Crown 1

Last week I was very kindly invited to have dinner at The Old Crown, Girton.  After an extensive refurbishment earlier in the year, The ‘New’ Old Crown is stylishly designed and very welcoming. Wandering in on a drizzled filled evening, we ordered drinks at the bar and settled at a table there to peruse the menus. The Old Crown has a set menu which is served Monday to Saturday (12-3pm, 6-10pm) at £20 for three courses and a la carte.

After browsing the menus for a little while our food order was taken and we were then shown through to our table with water offered (Sparkling) and brought to the table (I love not having to ask for it).

Within a few minutes of getting settled at our table our starter arrived. I had chosen the Charred English Asparagus.  I’ll be honest I chose it mainly because I had seen a picture of it earlier that day and thought ‘oh my god that looks epic’.

I wasn’t disappointed the asparagus was cooked perfectly, served with crispy bacon, a chive hollandaise, asparagus veloute and for the me, the main event a crispy hens egg. The egg was still running inside too which just added to richness of my starter.  Mixing the some of the veloute and hollandaise (I don’t know whether that’s proper etiquette but it was tasty) I really wanted to ask for a spoon or better pick the plate up and lick it…

For main I had a generously portioned Pork Wellington stuffed with Pork Tenderloin and Black Pudding in a light crispy pastry.  With the wellington, Tomato salad, homemade ketchup and tomato water which, was very nice indeed.

After the mains were cleared the pudding menus appeared and it was time to see if there was any room left for something sweet.  It turned out there was, I ordered the chocolate and pistachio mille-feuille.  I cannot resist a chocolate pudding and the mille-feuille did not disappoint! Fabulous chocolate mousse and pistachio crème pat between crispy pastry and topped with a chocolate layer.

Feeling suitably stuffed and satisfied our meal came to an end. I would definitely go to back to The Old Crown, it’s a lovely place. The staff are so welcoming, warm and helpful.  The food itself was fantastic, you have to go and eat there! Make sure you save room for all three courses, you will not be disappointed!
